Check out our shout out in the Style Guru Diary!

'Being Canadian, to me GST used to mean Goods and Services Tax – but in my LA life it stands for “Grace Somatomorphic Technique”. Created by my instructor, body-awareness-guru and fitness extraordinaire Anna Rahe, I generally describe GST® as a combination between pilates, dance and intense stretching. The best of what’s best for your body. It’s revolutionary and transformational because in Anna's words... "it teaches you how to change the musculoskeletal relationships that make your body look and feel the way it does".'

Pain or change?

Most of us are used to automatically associating pain in our bodies with something negative - an injury, misuse, etc. In fact, this is why a lot of people seek out GST: to heal themselves of pain that that they may just have come to accept or that nothing else can alleviate. GST can help that kind of pain in ways you've never imagined.

I personally came to GST when I was recovering from an injury that other teachers and professionals had just kind of shrugged about and told me I would recover from in time, but that time would be at least 6 months if not longer. Not only did I end up rehabbing that injury, but I gained more range of motion than I had ever had before and with GST, I was able to actually correct the source of what would have become a increasingly serious repetitive stress injury. Actually, now that I think about it, I haven't had any injuries in my ankles or knees since starting GST - both of which gave me problems in my time as a dancer ever since high school.

But, that doesn't mean that throughout this process, I haven't encountered "pain." Obviously, if you are attempting to change your body, breaking old movement habits and returning to your organic state, you will experience discomfort, muscle soreness, and sometimes pain. This can be alarming for people who are new to GST, but as you progress with it and stick it out, you learn to distinguish between this kind of transformational pain and the kind of pain that happens when you're injured. You begin to find that the pain is almost a good sign - it means that you're doing something that is challenging your body to change, opening up tight joints or muscles, and getting into your body deeper than ever before. And that negative injury related pain will disappear, even if you've had it for years.

A hip opening

In the last few classes I have been feeling some major changes in my body. Yesterday, during the GST teacher training program, we were doing a "1st cortile" roll down. As we were in a full hip flexor extension, I felt a twitch in my right hip flexor and then it disappeared. 2 hours later I was feeling like I was walking on water. My gate was long and gentle and I had slightly dizzy and euphoric sensation throughout my entire body.

As a bootie tucker my entire life, my hips have been congested and locked, limiting my range of motion. I think I am on a new path to of full body sensations!!

I feel like a GST ballerina!

Today's class let me actually see what all this "1st cortile" work actually does...besides giving me a bootie. I've never been able to get the leg extension in dance that I always longed for...but remember this world, my legs are now fully flying high. Just learn how to wrap that 1st cotile back, down and around the hip and watch your legs soar! Why didn't I know this muscle action when I actually performed....better late than never.

GST kicked my ass today. I'm so excited, We're creating a signature GST flow class that rocks. You will definitely sweat!! I cant wait to start teaching it. It opened up my energy channels and moved my spine in in every possible direction. There is no other technique that makes every part of the body feel energized and alive. By the way congrats to Pete Hyke who won the GST Sampler, at the
